Spectrum of Light Transformation Center (SOL Center) is a program created by Stacey M. Kananen and Lisa Bonnice, her biographer/co-author. Stacey is a survivor of heinous abuse, which resulted in the murder of both parents at the hands of her brother, who was also viciously abused. It is her belief that if a program like SOL Center was in place during her childhood, both parents would be alive, her brother would not be in jail and her devastated family would have been spared years of anguish and terror.
The majority of abusers were once abused themselves: abuse is usually learned behavior—victims victimizing victims.
Part of that learned behavior is shame. Both the abused and the abuser feel shame for the role they are playing.
When one feels ashamed, one is not likely to ask for help to get out of their abusive situation.
SOL Center recognizes the courage that it takes to ask for help.
Children are reluctant to ask for help because they fear:
a) they will not be believed;
b) they will face even more abuse for telling family secrets;
c) their parent(s) will end up in jail;
d) they will end up in a foster home.
Abused parents are reluctant to ask for help because:
a) they’ve tried to get help before but it backfired;
b) they will face heightened abuse for telling family secrets;
c) they will be arrested for neglect or accessory to abuse for not coming forward sooner;
d) their abusive spouse will be arrested and they fear the repercussions of that event.
Abusive parents are reluctant to ask for help because:
a) they will be arrested;
b) asking for help is the same as admitting they are wrong, weak or bad;
c) they feel too far gone, that too much irreparable damage has been done;
d) everyone else is to blame.
SOL Center is …
…a voluntary program for families who are already abusive or are afraid they are heading in that direction because of abuse in their past. They wish to escape the cycle of abuse—in a non-judgmental way that keeps them out of the legal system before heinous crimes are committed.
… a holistic, body/mind/spirit method of therapy that addresses all facets of the human condition and family dynamics in order to help all family members to heal and be healed. The family works together to stay together, if at all possible.
… a program that works as an alternative to the legal and CPS systems, in order to keep people out of the courts and in their homes.
